A Journey of Many Paths
Marc Mortiboys is a dentist, author, speaker and visionary best known as The Dental Shaman. After more than four decades in dentistry, his journey has expanded far beyond the dental chair, exploring the meeting place between modern science, indigenous wisdom and the profound connection between the mouth and the whole human experience.
A life-changing near-death experience in Southeast Asia, together with time spent living alongside indigenous communities, transformed Marc’s understanding of healing, purpose and what it truly means to care for another human being. Those experiences continue to inspire his writing and his mission to help people see the mouth not merely as a collection of teeth, but as the gateway to health, vitality and inner transformation.
Through his books, educational work, and pioneering innovations in conscious oral health, Marc encourages a future in which prevention, wisdom, and personal responsibility stand alongside the very best of modern dentistry.
The Smile Gate is his most personal work to date; a novel that blends adventure, spirituality and timeless truths into a story of courage, awakening and remembering who we truly are. It invites readers on a journey that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal.
Marc lives in England with his wife, Kim, and continues to write, teach and inspire a growing international community to embrace healthier smiles and healthier lives.
“Every smile has a story. Every story has the power to heal.”
“May this story remind you that the greatest journeys are never measured in miles, but in the distance travelled by the human heart.”
“May your smile always lead you home.”

About The Book
This book represents the culmination of a sustained and deeply personal inquiry into the intersections of professional practice, lived experience, spiritual reflection, and human transformation. The Smile Gate: A Shamanic Journey Through the Teeth of Time was conceived as an exploration of how the human body, particularly the teeth, bones, jaw, and voice, may function not only as biological structures but also as vessels of memory, emotion, identity, trauma, healing, and consciousness.
For many years, Marc Mortiboy’s work as a dentist placed him in close relationship with pain, fear, illness, and the silent emotional histories often carried within the body. Over time, questions began to emerge that conventional clinical frameworks alone could not fully answer.
The purpose of this work is therefore twofold. First, it offers a narrative journey that situates personal experience within broader questions of meaning, embodiment, consciousness, suffering, and transformation. Through story, memory, symbolism, and reflection, the book explores the ways human beings seek healing not only physically, but emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically. Second, it seeks to provide readers with reflections, insights, and practices that may serve as points of orientation within their own explorations of health, spirituality, emotional healing, and self-understanding.
Some passages arise directly from lived experience, while others speak through metaphor, dream, vision, and spiritual interpretation.
This book is intended for a broad readership, including those interested in the meeting point between scientific knowledge, lived experience, symbolic interpretation, spiritual philosophy, and holistic approaches to healing. The practices, ideas, and symbolic frameworks described throughout this book are presented as invitations to reflection rather than prescriptions. Readers are encouraged to approach the material with openness, discernment, curiosity, and personal responsibility, taking from it only what genuinely resonates with their own experience and understanding.
